New hope of Resources! Turning to the Recycling !
KZWMN(Korea Zero Waste Movement Network) was a non government organization established to solve the serious problems of waste caused by rapid urbanization.
As a specialized citizen network of waste matters, the KZWMN helps domestic grass root organizations to focus on waste problems to encourage zero waste society.
It also has intermediated between central government and citizen communities.
The KZWMN was stated with 31 grass-root organizations in Seoul on Oct, 1997 and expanded as a national network composed of 180 various organizations including environment, customer, woman citizen movement. The key role of KZWMN is making alternative policies regarding waste relative matters and supporting all kinds of ecological waste treatments like recycling systems.
The KZWMN has showed a lot of efficient activities through its 180 grass-root NGO network. It could help the expansion of zero waste movement started from local communities to the whole domestic areas by supporting excellent local NGO activities regarding wastes.
The KZWMN is playing its roles by reducing more than 3 billion dollars national budget through its various movements such as the campaign of decreasing use of disposable products, deduction of packing papers, reduction of food garbage. The efforts of KZWMN have never been stopped until archiving a ecological recycling society.
As a specialized organization focused on waste problems, the KZWMN is seamlessly going on its activities with its local members covering the whole nation as well as its experts.
The key roles
1) Giving critical advices to the waste policy of government and observing the waste management of entrepreneurs to prevent squandering of the social resources by waste matters.
2) The importance of Global Civil Society is reinforced as the perception of global environmental cooperation is growing. Thus the KZWMN is supposed to contributing the global citizen society by cooperating with international waste related problems.
3) The KZWMN is making efforts to achieve resource recycling society by decreasing waste from intimidate relationship with citizens. It will have played a role as a intermediated organization between citizen and government to get Sustainable recycling society.

The KZWMN will find out the waste relative policies and help the government to raise the efficiency of using national budget by granting critical counseling. The network also helps preventing waste of social expenses with close watching of the waste management system of the entrepreneurs.
Reinforcement of public environmental mind
The KZWMN is reinforcing the mind of general public by continuous education and PR for zero waste society. It will expend its campaign with public questions, local inspections and PR activities.

Supporting the movements of local NGOs
The KZWMN is supporting the localized movements of domestic NGOs by annual subjective programs to give consistent directions to local organizations.

The KZWMN will do its best to find total waste management system with participated local public. The KZWMN is believing that a sustainable society could be achieved by the developing the organic recycling system between urban communities and rural communities.
1. Grass root movements to encourage resource recycling from waste
    - the Earth is not a disposable product. Rather it is a lot to inherit to the descendents.
About 30% of house discharged waste is composed of disposable products and packing papers. The seeking for more comfortable and luxurious life style makes more disposable and packing wastes. Many of disposable products are made of plastic materials. The KZWMN has tried to solve these disposable waste problems with Korea Ministry Environment and achieved visible goals.
Deposit for Shopping bag and encouragement of shopping basket
Almost around 10 billion disposable shopping bag has been used in Korea annually assuming more than 4~5 trillion bags are using around the world. The KZWMN had suggested making a deposit system for shopping bags to decrease the use of disposable shopping bags. The deposit system may contributed to decrease around 20~30% of using shopping bags and encouraged public to use shopping basket instead of disposable bags. The KZWMN has continually monitored the deposit system management to counsel the government could release more useful policies.
The monitoring of voluntary agreements of disposable products.
The emerging of fastfood and takeout stores makes a lot of disposable wastes. The KZWMN requested strongly fastfood as well as takeout business to ban disposable products in sales shops. This request may break out the voluntary agreements between the ministry of environment and fastfood enterprises to prohibit disposable products in stores above sizes regulated on a recycling law. The KZWMN has surveyed the monitoring of voluntary agreement results every quarter to help settling the agreement.
Wasteless vacations and holidays.
There are times a lot of wastes are discharged like international events, elections, vacation seasons. The KZWMN has made a continuous campaign to encourage wasteless and ecological events. The banning of free distribution with disposable cheering products in public sports complex contributed decrease of wastes was one of the KZWMN's achievement during 2002 Korea Japan world cup.
2. Food waste reduction and recycling activities·organic relevant wastes
The KZWMN has made efforts to manage organic waste since its establishment for solving discharged food waste valued almost 15 trillion Korean won annually. The movement of reducing 20% food waste is currently activating since 2001 with aid of government, local community, enterprises. The KZWMN is monitoring the business shops enforced reducing the food waste by law to encourage recycling of food waste.

3. Incineration and landfill activities.
The construction of overhead incinerator is waste of budget as well as making several side effects. The research of actual status of incinerator as well as landfill facilities to use a data of legislative activities has been done and monitoring plan for relevant construction budget is performed continuously. More than 20 million won for budget of incinerator construction was cut down in Seoul capital city as a result of the efforts and other local governments are following the efforts. The KZWMN will induce a recycling and separate garbage collection system to reduce final amount of waste by zero waste community operation.
The education of citizens for observing incinerator and landfill facilities.
The KZWMN has supported anti-incineration policy against government with local citizens and make various steps of educational materials for hazard of incineration.
The environmental effect survey nearby incinerator and landfills.
The KZWMN is monitoring the state of operation in small and medium size incinerators and landfills managed by local government and asked the closure for delinquent ones. The KZWMN has also analyzed the result of measured dioxin to decrease the discharging amount of dioxin from industrial waste incinerators.

The KZWMN is monitoring the status of incoming waste to incinerators and landfills to reduce the amount of recycling waste as well as change the attitude of local government waste policy.
4. GThe safe treatment movement for hazardous waste
    - Valuable investment for future!
Even Small quantity of hazardous wastes has strong toxicities enough to threat human body and environmental system. Thus the hazardous waste should maintained with strict observation. The KZWMN has advertised the menace of hazardous waste such as discharged fluorescent lamps, dry cells, etc to inquire strict recycling responsibility of producers.
The proper recycling and treatment of wastes containing mercury
The KZWMN has been made efforts to perform campaign and monitoring for success of separating discharged fluorescent lamps since 2001. With cooperation of ministry of environment and entrepreneurs, the KZWMN has tried to make a recycle system for electronic waste. As a result of these efforts, the KZWMN could insert discharged computers and cell phones to EPR(extended producer responsibility) list.
The monitoring of laundry waste
The KZWMN is monitoring the specified waste from laundry business even the total quantity is small. The total quantity of laundry solvent in Won-ju community was diminished more than 50% by continuous campaign for 2 years.
The survey of PVC containing products and anti purchasing movement.
The KZWMN has performed activities to decrease of packing materials containing PVC. The public advocate regarding the toxicity of PVC has been released by the survey of packing materials containing PVC and the checking of extrusion in endocrine disrupter.
The activities for medical waste.
The KZWMN has surveyed the status of medical waste management system over 300 medical facilities since 2003 and broken out the problems of medical waste treatment like improper waste keeping, faulty disposal of blood bottles.
5. Education and PR activities
The KZWMN has performed more than 100 times of waste education for citizen and campaigns annually to give the ecological mind in general public. The organization also has helped the citizen to understand the government waste policies.

The KZWMN is performed series of campaigns to make wasteless elections, reducing waste in resorts, zero waste holidays, etc. The KZWMN has released the citizen commitment of decreasing wastes and alerted the public by cooperative monitoring with the ministry of environment.

The KZWMN has gathered information such as the advanced waste policies and success cases in overseas to communicate the government and public by holding international symposium.
